Ngāi Tahu Tourism and Franz Josef Glacier Guides has today announced the launch of a new overnight glacier experience - a first-of-its-kind in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Available to book seasonally from December through to March, the experience offers unprecedented access to the Franz Josef Glacier - starting with a helicopter transfer and a guided glacier experience, before retreating back to a cosy glamping-style camp.

A natural extension to Franz Josef Glacier Guides pioneering glacier experiences; the overnight stay enables manuhiri (guests) the chance like never before to immerse themselves in the heart of Te Waipounamu (the South Island) and connect breathtaking landscapes and history of Ngāi Tahu.

Janelle Shaw at Franz Josef Guides says:

“Franz Josef Glacier Guides have been facilitating manuhiri from all over the world to foster connection, educate and understand the deep mana of the unique and delicate ecosystem of Franz Josef Glacier for more than 30 years.

“This new experience offers our manuhiri the ability to deepen this connection with this landscape. Whether it’s revelling in the beauty of the glacier at sunrise and sunset or taking time to reflect on its cultural and historical significance and connection to the ancient Pounamu trails once used by local whānau - we are excited to offer an experience like no other in Aotearoa New Zealand.”

About the experience

Guests will embark on their glacier adventure in the late afternoon, beginning with a helicopter flight to the glacier, where they will be greeted by their expert guides. After a daylight walk across the ice, guests will settle into their cosy glamping-style camp, where they will be met with warmth, cosiness and comfort, as well as private toilet facilities for the night. Meals, prepared by a local restaurant, will be flown up to the glacier, with drinks and appetisers served before a stunning dinner.

Commitment to Sustainability and Safety

Operated by Ngāi Tahu Tourism, Franz Josef Glacier Guides is deeply committed to preserving the fragile environment of the glacier. This overnight experience has been carefully designed to be sustainable, with no harm to the glacier’s ecosystem. All waste is removed, and minimal lighting is used to preserve the natural surroundings. The company has also reduced helicopter landings and shifted to lower-volume products as part of its ongoing partnership with the Department of Conservation.

With safety as a top priority, Franz Josef Glacier Guides has implemented a comprehensive risk management plan, including continuous weather monitoring, full evacuation protocols, and detailed safety briefings for all guests. The guide-to-guest ratio of 2:1 ensures personal attention, and all medical considerations are thoroughly evaluated before the experience.

This unique experience is available to book for NZD $7,000 for two guests (up to four guests total) and will be available from November through March.
